Not Native American Art? Forgeries, Copies, Replicas and Other Vexed Identities
12.10.2021, 18:15 - 20:00
University of Bern,
In the twenty-first century, scholars, collectors, and artists all must grapple with ethical issues concerning who has the right to make and/or represent Aboriginal North American art. Yet the history of the making of this art is riddled with misrepresentations and even forgeries, many of which have not been fully explored nor unmasked in the literature on these topics. This lecture, derived from a book-in-progress (the first on this topic), considers replicas, copies, forgeries, homages, and even digital “surrogates” as they apply to archaeological, historical and contemporary arts of Indigenous North America.
